Pop Quiz: How many hospitals do we have in the South Bay? Answer at the end of this blog.
One of those hospitals is Torrance Memorial Medical Center (TMMC), which sponsors a group called Young Physicians and Professionals Alliance (YPPA). I am the co-chair of this group (professional co-chair, course). YPPA was established in 2012 with the purpose of bringing together physicians and community leaders to support targeted initiatives at TMMC and to help raise health-awareness in the community.
YPPA fulfills this mission in multiple ways. Throughout the year we host gatherings that might include a BBQ at the beach, beer tastings at one of our many local breweries, and hikes through the hills and trails of Palos Verdes.
In 2016 we hosted our first annual Casino Night where members and guests alike came together for a fun night of playing cards, eating BBQ, and line dancing. Yes, we dressed up in western wear. Not only did the 100+ attendees have a blast, YPPA also raised over $15,000 that we donated to the North Tower Renovations to benefit maternal/child care.
In 2015 we launched our support for two awards that recognize TMMC employees. The DAISY Award recognizes Registered Nurses who demonstrate excellence in their job and show compassionate care. The Reason is You award honors employees in other job classifications who have delivered a remarkable patient experience.
I am proud to be part of YPPA and to support such an outstanding local hospital. If you have interest in learning more about this organization, I’d love to hear from you.
